This prisoner mask might remind you of the famous Dr Hannibal Lecter character.  He was the guy who liked to eat his victims.  When he was eventually captured he was made to wear a similar mask to protect his captors from being bitten.  They are held in place with elastic straps above and below the prisoner's ears.
